NWKT’s Holly Bell Co-Authors Publications on HIPAA Omnibus Rule

HIPAA Omnibus Rule Information

The Harmonie Group’s Medical Malpractice Defense and Healthcare Committee formed a HIPAA subcommittee to compile two papers addressing the implications of the Omnibus Rule, which has a compliance date of September 23, 2013.  One publication is written to provide guidance to covered entities and the other publication is written to provide guidance to law firms as business associates.

Compliance with the Omnibus Rule is critical, as covered entities and business associates face steep monetary penalties for non-compliance. The Omnibus Rule includes a number of changes, including the expansion of the definition of business associate, clarification on how business associates may be directly liable for breaches and changes to the breach notification standard.  The changes addressed in the Omnibus Rule and the potential penalties are detailed in these publications.

The papers written by the HIPAA subcommittee are both listed in the Healthcare/Medicare section of the Resource section of The Harmonie Group’s website here.
